Introduction

The Mewar Festival of Udaipur heralds the advent of Spring. Though the
festival coincides with the Gangaur Festival, it has a distinction of its
own. People, both young and the young at heart begin to converge at Udaipur
to witness and be a part of the festivities. The Mewar Festival commemorates
the valour and gallantry of the Rajput kings and rulers of yore. Various
contests are held that give an insight into the likings and tastes of the
royalty. Cultural performances including dance and music performances remind
the audiences of the glorious past of the Rajput monarchs and their deeds of
bravado.
Celebrations
Though the Mewar Festival spans one day, it is highly significant both in
terms of religion and culture. Being a participant, you can be witness to
the spiritual fervour that the devotees set forth and the various cultural
aspects that the festival has. Men and women can be seen dressed in their
traditional costumes moving in a procession that advances to Lake Pichola.
First of all, people dress the images of Isar and Gangaur and decorate them
with jewellery. Now, the images are taken out in procession. More and more
people continue to join in as the procession takes its course through the
lanes of the city. Women and children can also be seen sitting on the roofs
to have a glimpse of the gods and make offerings. The procession advances
with all sanctity. On arrival at Lake Pichola, the images of Isar and
Gangaur are transferred to special boats on the lakes. This is performed
amid much singing and celebration. The effect is so intense that even the
most jaded traveller can be stirred at the sight. A cultural aura surrounds
the whole activity.
After
the religious rites are over, it's time to tune in to the most interesting
part of it all - the cultural extravaganza. Artists including folk dancers
and musicians arrive to put up performances that truly symbolize the rich
cultural side of Rajasthan and its people. Dance forms like Chari and
Ghoomar are performed with much festivity. Women folks participate in the
dance forms wearing brightly coloured costumes. There are held competitions
that keep the audiences in a joyful mood all the way long. The festival
culminates with a delightful display of fireworks.
