Introduction
The erstwhile hunting ground of the maharajas of Jaipur, Ranthambore
National Park claims its position between the ancient Aravali and the
Vindhya mountain ranges. The national park was first recognised as a game
sanctuary in 1955. And then in the year 1972, Project Tiger Scheme was
launched here. Eventually, as it deserved, the sanctuary was established and
declared a national park in 1980. The rugged terrain and the exotic and
pristine wildlife species of the park make it one of the most prized in the
country. Wildlife fanciers, from across the globe, arrive here to spot some
of the most endangered species of animals. The park has a total area of
1,334 sq km along with its abutting sanctuaries the Kaila Devi
Sanctuary and the Mansingh Sanctuary.
Wildlife Attractions
Though the park harbours countless wildlife species, the Royal Bengal Tiger
is the cynosure of all eyes here. Spotting the majestic predator prowling
the jungle is a precious experience. Tigers can be observed close to the
lakes and the waterholes. Or, they can be spotted lazing on the ruins of the
fort. Other commonly seen animals include leopard, striped hyena, sambar,
chital, nilgai, Jungle cat, Sloth bear, Black buck, wild boar, Indian Flying
fox, Desert cat etc. The park bears mostly dry deciduous forests comprising
nearly 300 tree species.

Well distributed water bodies and the diversified terrain of the park have
also invited a huge number of bird species including both resident and
migratory. There are around 272 avian species that the park is home to.
Generally sighted bird species include parakeet, quail, kingfisher, drongo,
stork, oriole, partridge, thrush, hornbill, starling, teal, koel, barbet
etc.
