Introduction
From being declared a sanctuary in 1955 to becoming a national park in
1979, the Sariska Tiger Reserve has been a regular haunt for travellers from
across the globe. The dry and deciduous forests of the reserve harbours a
number of exotic and close-to-being-extinct wildlife species. Sharp cliffs
and narrow valleys of the ancient Aravali Hills predominate the landscape of
the jungle. Claiming a total area of 866 sq km, the Sariska Tiger Reserve
previously served as a hunting ground for the royal families of the Alwar
state. Besides a pristine flora and fauna, you can also witness the ancient
architectural treasures that lie here and their in the reserve. Over the
years, an effective management has seen a rise in the floral and faunal
population of the park. An increase of 133.19% has been recorded in the
density of forests that has further boosted the total count of animal
species.
Wildlife Attractions
The biggest draw for tourists here is the tiger. However, the wildlife
reserve is home to a number of other species like leopard, caracal, Rusty
spotted cat, Jungle cat, four-horned antelope, sambar, spotted deer, wild
boar, blue bull, jackal, hyena etc. Another species that Sariska is known
for is the large population of Rhesus Monkeys that have found their habitat
around Talvriksh. Bird fanciers too can gratify their thirst here, for the
park also shelters worth-seeing avian species. You can spot bird species
including peafowl, Grey partridge, Bush quail, sand grouse, tree pie, golden
backed wood pecker, crested Serpent eagle and the great Indian horned owl.
While on your wildlife expedition inside the reserve, you can also explore
the historical landmarks that lie here. The Kankawari Fort is a worth
visiting site for all. It is the very fort that Mughal emperor Aurangzeb
used to imprison his brother Dara Shikoh. The ancient Shiva temples or the
Neelkanth Temples are also included in the historical remnants. Though in a
state of desertion, these temples are a wonderful sight for onlookers. Also
located inside the reserve is a palace built by the maharaj of Alwar.
Safaris Provided
The perfect way to explore the wilderness of the park is through a Jeep
safari. You can choose an open Jeep or a canter and set out on your wild
hunt. Guides and escorts are available to assist you throughout your trip.
They can provide you with sighting tips and also load you with interesting
legends and stories about the erstwhile hunt and the hunters. Tuesdays and
Saturdays (0800 hrs 1500 hrs) see free entry for Indians. On the
afore mentioned days, local devotees gather at the Hanuman Temple, located
on the park premises. They offer flowers, coconut and sweets and pray to the
deity to get their wishes fulfilled.
